Now in its 42nd year, the annual event invites entries through an open call. Projects in any media can be entered into eight categories – book illustration, children's book illustration and advertising illustration being a few examples – and can be submitted as either Professional or as New Talent for work by students or recent graduates.

This year's shortlist includes names such as Ben Tallon, Claudine O'Sullivan, Owen Gildersleeve, Yukai Du and Benji Davies. The 200 shortlisted works will go on display during an exhibition at Somerset House from 7 until 20 June, and will then tour the UK and internationally. Winners will be announced during a ceremony at Somerset House in June. You can see the full shortlist at theaoi.com.
