The role
Mercury, a fintech company, is hiring a Staff Brand Designer to set and maintain the standard of craft for its brand. You will lead the most complex and visible brand design projects and share responsibility for creative direction with another staff-level brand designer and creative leadership. The role can be based in San Francisco, New York or Portland, or done remotely from within the United States or Canada.
What you'll do
- Set and maintain the standard of craft across campaigns, web, social, events and other places the brand appears
- Lead the most complex, high-visibility brand design projects from brief to delivery
- Co-lead how the creative direction develops, including visual standards for typography, imagery, layout and motion
- Give hands-on craft oversight of what Brand Studio produces
- Commission and art-direct external photographers, illustrators and motion designers
- Write brand system documentation and frameworks for making design decisions
- Mentor IC3 and IC4 designers through critique, pairing and feedback
- Work with brand strategists, copywriters, product marketing managers and leadership across channels
- Shape how Brand Studio uses AI: set standards for its role, build brand guidelines that AI tools can work from, and hold the quality bar
About you
- A portfolio showing mastery of typography, layout, colour and composition across brand contexts
- A clear, well-developed aesthetic point of view
- Fluent in brand systems, with experience of scaling a brand and steering it through growth or change
- 7 to 10 or more years of brand design experience, ideally in settings where craft is prized, such as agencies, fashion, premium consumer brands or design-led technology companies
- Staff-level experience: working autonomously, influencing without formal authority and shaping a team's output
- Proficient in Figma, with experience contributing to or owning a design system
- Strong verbal and presentation skills
- The judgement to balance fine detail with the bigger picture
- A considered view on AI in high-craft design, backed by hands-on use of AI tools
- Curious, restrained and committed to quality
