Scul?tures: Craig Black’s colourful 3D lettering inspired by George Wylie

George Wyllie was known for his playful yet serious, thought-provoking approach. With his notable sculptures such as The Straw Locomotive and The Paper Boat, he pushed the barriers of art and creativity, encouraging community participation and public dialogue on major subjects which concerned society at large.

He placed the question mark at the heart of all his work, describing his art as ‘scul?ture’ because “the question mark should be at the centre of everything”.

Craig has used George’s maverick approach as inspiration for his 3D canvas, built with a question mark as the focal point. A beautiful colour palette of red, white and black paint has been poured all over the canvas, creating a distinctive, marbled effect. A video showing the process can be viewed here.
