In a sea of stylish wobbles and delicate swashes, Broker is the typographic equivalent of deciding to face the world raw and unfiltered. Created by In-House International, the new angular variable display type family features controls for weight, shape and decoration, so it can adapt to suit your mood.
Broker can go from slim, square mono-weight to edgy stressed angled styles and full-on style with chunky serif heels. And because it's drawn on a rectangular frame, it's modular, making it particularly easy to layout and stack.
Crafted by In-House International, a creative and branding studio in Austin, Texas, the typeface is inspired by DIY, cut paper lettering, so if you're expecting something delicate, elegant or precious, you've come to the wrong place. Instead, we're talking about a rough and tumble typeface to play with and make your own. As such, its name refers to the "work-in-progress hopefulness of the messy middle," as its lead designer Alexander Wright describes.
"We named it thinking of the liminality of brokering – a negotiation in progress, the work-in-progress hopefulness of the messy middle. It celebrates the first few lines and their angular shards before process and pressure smooth off the edges," adds Michu Benaim Steiner, creative chief at In-House.
For those interested, you can use the variable control to try different styles to give shape to your words. Uppercase characters across all styles are contained in equally sized rectangles, making them delightfully easy to stack, mix, and match. That means it's perfect for creative projects, posters, funky packaging, flyers, motion displays, and "fearless" branding.
The font family includes uppercase and lowercase alphabets, numbers, punctuation and Latin diacritics – fully adaptable as a variable type (.ttf) for designers using compatible platforms. It's also available as thirteen unique OpenType (.otf) fonts that can be mixed and matched.
Developed by Rodrigo Fuenzalida at FragType, and available through YouWorkForThem, Broker is the latest from In-House International's foundry. Other typefaces are available. Enjoy browsing the family over at weareinhouse.com.
