Delightful funny sculptures that mix 15th century Florentine portraits with modern life

Spotting a stage-ready microphone attached to an Italian woman from the 15th century is always going to raise a smile or two. There's certainly a sense of humour that flows through the delightful sculptures of Spanish artist Gerard Mas.

Evoking Florentine portraits with a contemporary twist, he uses marble, alabaster, wood and resin to craft his extraordinary busts. Seemingly plucked from the Renaissance period, it comes as a surprise to see his imagined characters picking their noses, blowing bubblegum, sucking lollipops or donning a skull inspired tattoo. An extraordinary theme to all of his works is that the skin takes on a very realistic form, making the female busts appear almost too real.

Born in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Girona, Spain, Gerard studied at Llotja Art School in Barcelona. Discover more of his talent at www.gerardmas.com.
