Marietta Varga's new series recalls childhood excitement of winter's first snow

"I was lying half asleep under the heavy duvet. A faint shuffling, the gentle sound of the curtains, my sister’s restrained joy and the whiteness that was slowly flowing into the room made me wide awake. Every year we felt the same indescribable excitement and joy on the first winter morning," says Marietta Varga, a photographer we've long admired.

Her latest photograph series, entitled First, recalls those happy moments we experienced as children when the first snow arrived each year. She captures her hometown Siófok in Hungary, cloaked under an appealing white blanket. With its buildings and infrastructure renowned for its muted tones, her birthplace enjoys a whole new look and feel; you can almost hear the quiet and calm, and footsteps crunching in the snow.

Marietta graduated with a photography degree from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. She now lives and works in London.
