Lost in La Bassa: photographer Brando Ghinzelli returns "home" to recall childhood memories

Do you know that feeling of home? One that comforts and soothes you? You can't quite put your finger on it. Perhaps it's the familiarity. Safety. The warmth.

But it's something we all strive to recapture when we move away from where we grew up. For Brando Ghinzelli, this sentiment formed the basis of his award-winning series, Lost in La Bassa.

"Luigi Ghirri says that melancholia can also arise when a landscape can make us remember too many things and that's probably what I felt when I shoot the images collected in this series," says Brando. "When I moved to another town I used to come back here to visit my relatives but, with the passage of time the visits have become more sporadic. That's why I decided to retrace these landscapes in order to recall lost memories from my childhood and see these lands with new eyes."

Born in Viadana (Mantua, Italy) in 1989, Brando now lives in Rome. He studied photography and photojournalism at Officine Fotografiche in Rome with Gaetano Di Filippo and has exhibited across the world. Lost in La Bassa recently won the Officine Fotografiche Portfolio in Mostra prize.
