Fabrica opens callout for creative Corona solutions

Renowned Italian design school Fabrica is the famous "communication research centre" founded by fashion brand billionaire Luciano Benetton in 1994.

It offers people under 25 from around the world a one-year scholarship, accommodation and a round-trip ticket to Italy to "enable a highly diverse group of researchers" working across design, visual communication, photography, journalism, product design and more.

Usually, those who want to showcase and explore their ideas with the school must undergo a rigid selection process, as well as pay a substantial course fee. Still, in light of the current pandemic, the school is opening up its network fr anyone to "share creative ideas and bring the art community together" while the school is closed.

"Our doors are temporarily closed but not our minds," says Fabrica. "In this period of emergency let's put our creativity at the service of an intangible but still necessary need, the one of trying to tell this unique historical moment through art, design, photography, writing, video."

Fabrica is currently accepting submission ideas and works across design, photography, writing and video. The only brief is to "activate a chain of creative solidarity to offer words and images that could help us to face this period," says the organisation, adding that a silver lining to it all could be that "this moment of isolation can be an igniter of great ideas, and a crazy story to tell one day."

The school's site has also opened up its content for free across videos, short films, music, lectures for anyone and everyone currently isolating. These include a talk about the importance of failure by Erik Kessels, Evidence, one of the first Fabrica films directed by Godfrey Reggio with music by Philip Glass, a virtual tour of Fabrica, the marvel of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and more.
