Based in Hudson, NY, his colourful patterned compositions, painted onto the natural raw material of sliced tree trunks, make for an intriguing combination and sharp contrast.

Apparently, Middlebrook is fascinated by how trees record the passage of time and even pick up on things that change within the surrounding environment. His artworks hint at the rings you'd normally find on a tree trunk, celebrating their natural recording of history – "a jarring yet elegant juxtaposition of natural unpredictability with rigidly calculated forms".

His installation, Gold Rush, is currently on display at the Peters Projects gallery in Santa Fe.
