Dark Tokyo From Above: Photographer captures Japan's neon capital from rooftops

"I've always had a fascination with Tokyo as a city that, in many ways, inspires the cyberpunk aesthetic," explains Lukasz Palka, of his series that captures Japan's capital from rooftops at night.

"Having spent a few years living in Tokyo, I found more and more environments that could fit right into the universes of films like Akira or Blade Runner. I wanted to capture the intensity and chaotic nature of the Tokyo metropolis through this series of photos which I call L'appel du Vide – The Call of The Void."

Lukasz is a photographer originally from Poland but has lived in Tokyo since he arrived a decade ago, never wanting to leave after being captivated by its culture. "I am often asked what is it about Japan or about Tokyo that I like most, but it’s impossible to narrow it down to a single aspect. The city breathes like a living organism, energy ebbs and flows within it, while humans and traffic pump through its arteries as though propelled by a beating heart.

"It's impossible not to be intoxicated by this environment of light and concrete, stage to the dramas of life. The only way for me to comprehend and convey these notions is through photography."
