Illustrator Fatti Burke designs The Snug, an immersive installation that celebrates the iconic Irish pub

From the signage, seating and coasters to the wall art, bar stools and windows, illustrator Fatti Burke has designed every little detail of a pop-up Irish pub in a new immersive show in Dublin, made in collaboration with local creative studio, Hen's Teeth.

Called The Snug, the temporary exhibition, which celebrates Irish culture and the beating heart of the community, is decorated in Burke's playful and colourful illustrative style. Created in partnership with Guinness, it hopes to be the "ultimate representation of being together" as things return to normal.

"I wanted to create a place of surreal familiarity on the walls of The Snug, covered in graphic artwork and nostalgic ephemera," Burke tells Creative Boom. "There's a shared longing for warm nights in the pub with your favourite people, and I took this longing along for a cheeky ride. Snugs have a comforting feeling and you want to leave them covered in jokes and brightness and freshly made memories. It's about fun and Irishness and the power to be found in having a laugh."

Anyone can visit the installation to enjoy the things they've missed during the past year: a cold pint of Guinness (of course), hanging with friends and an art exhibition. But due to its size, you are only allowed in groups of two (to allow for social distancing).

"The past year has been marred by missing out on things," says Lily Finlay from Hen's Teeth. "From missing friends and family, events that should have happened, sad moments, happy moments – the ability to be together through thick and thin. In Ireland, The Snug is the ultimate representation of being together: cosying up to loved ones in about as intimate a place as possible sharing delicious, creamy pints, laughs, tears, memories, while crowded into the nook of your favourite pub, one that's seen it all and has the memorabilia and decor to prove it."

The Snug by Fatti Burke is currently on display at Hen's Teeth's Blackpitts, Dublin 8 Gallery until 15 August 2021. Even better, you can purchase much of what's on display via hensteethstore.com, including the cheeky beer mats, matchboxes, ashtray, art prints...even the pub sign hanging outside the door.
