Anthony Burrill, Oli Bentley & Thomas Mayo create giant alphabetic prints using just four shapes
Graphic artist Anthony Burrill has collaborated with Oli Bentley of Leeds-based design studio Split, and wood type maker, designer and printer, Thomas Mayo, to experiment with the Brico System and create giant letterpress prints of the alphabet using just four shapes.
Entitled Brico.01, the monochrome artworks are 1.5 metres tall and printed by People Powered Press, the other venture of Bentley and which also happens to be the largest letterpress operation of its kind, apparently world-record-holding.
"With near-endless possibilities of letterforms, weights, sizes and styles, it was created so that anyone can share in the joy of type design," explains Bentley. "It will be used to create large-scale works and murals with community groups, extending the mission of the People Powered Press to amplify voices and spread words worth spreading.
Adds Burrill, "As soon as I heard about the People Powered Press I had to see it in person and meet the people behind it. It sounded like a crazy idea. Who in their right mind would embark on such a mind-boggling enterprise? When I met Oli, it all made sense. I'm in awe. It's an incredible feat of engineering and ambition, taking the process of letterpress and leading it into new and exciting territory."
Just one of each print/letter from A—Z is available for sale. All proceeds will support the community work of the People Powered Press. Email the team at [email protected] to find out prices and available letters.
Elsewhere, the trio has created The Brico01 System Book, a limited edition, signed and numbered publication that has been produced to document the making of this first set of alphabetic prints. It showcases the full series in glorious detail and gives insight into the creation of the system with words from Anthony Burrill. You can grab a copy via Split's website.
