Photographs by Lucie Rox that capture the feeling of being 'Lost in Translation' in Japan
During a short trip to Japan, photographer Lucie Rox captured the novelty we all feel when travelling through a place that looks unrecognisable to our home country.

Brought together for a new book, Signs reveals the streets, objects and people Rox encountered, giving us a glimpse of everyday life and Japanese culture. "It's about the awakening of the eye in a place where the alphabet, the codes, the rituals are unknown to us," she says.
French-born, Rox is a photographer and director based in London. Her work extends across fashion, portraiture, documentary and landscape and has previously been published by the likes of Dazed, AnOther, Muse or Sixteen Journal. Her commercial clients include Loewe, Givenchy, Joseph, Kenzo, MM6 Maison Margiela and Paco Rabanne.
Signs is a collection of photographs taken while travelling around Japan in 2017. "But it isn't, per se, about Japan," adds Rox. "In a place with so many symbolisms, they are merely a 'sign' of something else, something that we can't see."
