LJB Studio gets sustainable for PechaKucha Manchester's 20th milestone

To mark its 20th milestone, PechaKucha Manchester recently hosted a night of ‘Future’ themed talks by local designers with sustainability at its heart. LJB Studio was chosen to design, specify and print manage the event programme, taking inspiration from John H Schaar's famous quote: "The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating".

Going for the sustainable angle, founder Laura Boast chose environmentally-friendly G.F Smith’s ‘Gmund Urban Brasilia Dust’ paper stock, which has a woodgrain effect. "The cover foil design celebrates the special 20th volume, combined with Roman numerals to represent the PechaKucha 20×20 rule: to present a given theme using only 20 images and 20 seconds per image," explains Laura.

"The format for the programme was concertina folded, so when unfolded and stood up the format creates the Roman numeral ‘XX’. And to save on resources no binding methods were used.

"The inside of the programme showcases the line-up of eight speakers, including multi-award winning designer Rick Banks and founder of ‘The Designers Republic’ Ian Anderson. The zigzag layout echoes the ‘XX’, with text flowing bottom, top, bottom, top throughout."

And because the Futura typeface turned 90 this year, Laura decided to use it for the body copy, which complimented the stencil font. A beautiful project. Discover more of LJB Studio's work at ljbstudio.co.uk.
