Poet Slash Artist: Manchester International Festival brings together visual artists and poets

Manchester International Festival is bringing together creatives from the worlds of writing and visual arts with Poet Slash Artist, an exhibition of 21 unique artworks that were first displayed in the streets of the city as part of MIF21.

Co-curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Lemn Sissay, Poet Slash Artist shines a light on poets who interact with visual arts and visual artists who connect through poetry. Among the leading international artists featured in the exhibition include big names such as Tracey Emin, Inua Ellams, Imtiaz Dharker and the late Etel Adnan and Friederike Mayröcker.

Art and poetry have long gone hand in hand, with the verses and prints of William Blake being one of the earliest and most notable examples, though. However, the two disciplines continue to feed off one another and provide unique opportunities for curators hoping to disseminate culture with the public, as the displays for Poet Slash Artist have demonstrated.

Alongside a gallery display of the 21 artworks, limited edition A3 prints will also go on sale from today, so you can enjoy their words of wisdom and visual delights from the comfort of your own home. Each high-quality giclée print is limited to a run of 50 to 100, so if you want to order one for £50, make sure you don't hang around to avoid disappointment.

Printed on Hahnemühle's range of fine art and eco papers, each A3 print will be accompanied by Hahnemühle's certificate of authenticity, with hologram stickers and matching edition numbers.

Hans Ulrich Obrist and Lemn Sissay say of the work on display: "They bring art and poetry together in a time when we need new forms of togetherness in this world… As Etel Adnan said, 'The world needs togetherness, not separation. Love not suspicion. A common future, not isolation.'"

The pair added: "The Poet Slash Artists are luminous angels. Manchester is the magnetic force to draw these talents to this unique exhibition where the city itself becomes the gallery. The city of angles and angels."

And suppose you're after even more interaction between poets and artists. In that case, you'll be thrilled to learn that a second iteration of the Poet Slash Artist exhibition will be running until 31 December 2021. Presented by Kunsthal Charlottenborg, it will include an additional 11 Danish poets/artists, exhibited in the streets, train stations and bus stops throughout Denmark.
