Black Balloons: The curious simplicity of temporary air-filled sculptures

In his intriguing series Black Balloons, artist Tadao Cern enjoyed exploring the concept of using up to 400 black balloons and assembling them to create lots of different temporary sculptures.

Knowing that his artworks won't last forever, the playful installations began with just two black balloons filled with two different gasses: helium and sulfur hexafluoride. When he realised the endless possibilities if he introduced more balloons to the equation, he became overwhelmed and excited to experiment further.

He explained: "It's a never ending story of an explorer. Now I'm building these sculptures one by one, keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that soon enough everyone will have a chance to see them alive. Furthermore, they interact with the spectator in so many ways – one can only imagine how a sculpture made out of 400 balloons would react to a wind that one creates just by walking by."

Born in Lithuania, Tadao received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in Vilnius Lithuania, and graduated in 2009. He currently lives and works in Vilnius. To discover more, visit www.tadaocern.com.
