Lisa Maltby is a freelance designer, illustrator and lettering artist based in Sheffield, specialising in work that has a traditional and authentic feel.
With over 15 years experience working for commercial clients worldwide, she's partnered with John Lewis, Virgin Atlantic, Waitrose Food, Chatsworth House and English Heritage. She's published her own book, too.
Elsewhere, she is a force for good in supporting the creative community. In 2019, she took the time out of her busy schedule to create a pricing survey for illustrators and shared the results online to help those of you struggling to set your day rate or decide how you charge.
I met Lisa at the new Cultureplex in Manchester to chat about freelancing, juggling work while being a mum, and why she has decided to help other creatives in the industry. We talked about how to price yourself as an illustrator and ensure you get paid fairly.
We also chatted about the ups and downs of running your own business and why we couldn't work for anyone else, but how it's important to try and maintain our integrity. In this episode, I start to open up a little about my own experiences, too – which was something I wasn't expecting from this podcast.
