The joy of community as a creative professional, with Katie Chappell

This week's guest is Katie Chappell, who specialises in live illustration for global brands such as Facebook, Google and Apple. Based in rural Berwick-upon-Tweed in North East England, Katie also describes herself as a virtual scribe and live graphic recorder with the "superpower to condense 90-minute conferences into 90 seconds". It's a way of turning dreaded Zoom meetings into fun and interactive sessions for her clients.

Elsewhere, Katie is the co-founder of The Good Ship Illustration, which helps illustrators and image-makers navigate a creative career. It's apparently helped over 700 students so far. And the same platform has its own podcast, which we highly recommend. You can hear Katie chatting with her good pals Helen Stephens and Tania Willis – also both successful illustrators and good friends.

Here, we chat about how Katie found her niche in "live" illustration. How she copes with working for huge brands like Google. We also talk about how she embraced where she now lives – having spent five years in Berlin. Katie also explains why there's no shame in a part-time job when you're trying to make illustration a full-time career, and we discuss productivity tips, business planning and why having your own creative community is everything. Lots of giggles here from a cheerful, funny creative that you'll no doubt love.
