Discoveries in Colour: the art of Carlos Cruz-Diez

Cruz-Diez was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1923. As a young man, he studied applied arts and then worked as an illustrator and creative director before moving to Europe; he settled first in Barcelona and then, in 1960, in Paris, as he built his career as an artist.

Today, he is considered one of the most influential modern thinkers in the realm of colour. His dynamic, immersive creations can be found in museums around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

As an artist who explores visual perception, Cruz-Diez believes that the role of the artist is to be an inventor and a discoverer.

Although he got his start long before the age of computers, these days he employs a complement of digital tools to create work that challenges and disrupts not only the way we perceive art but also the way artists create it.
