The role

A senior UX writing post at The New York Times, based at its New York headquarters. You would conceive, develop and write UX copy across the company's products, including the core news product, Games, Cooking, Wirecutter and The Athletic, and manage a small team of freelance UX writers. The role reports to the Associate Creative Director, Writing.

What you'll do

  • Write clear, accurate and persuasive interface copy for nytimes.com, the NYT app and other experiences
  • Handle incoming UX writing requests, set priorities and assign overflow work
  • Keep quality and consistency high across teams and look after the brand voice, making sure copy meets brand, newsroom and product style guidelines
  • Apply the brand voice to wayfinding, enhancements, paywalls, payflows and new tools or features, including push notifications, tooltips, light boxes, bottom sheets and new flow screens
  • Mentor in-house writers and manage freelance UX writers
  • Weigh up different perspectives while keeping work in line with business and engagement goals
  • Use insight, data and strategy to shape product copy
  • Work with designers, prototypers, marketers and others
  • Present the strategic reasoning behind your work to large groups, including leadership
  • Support the company's journalistic independence and mission

About you

  • At least eight years of writing for product, brand and UX across several products, teams or surfaces
  • Experience of managing writers or leading them functionally
  • A portfolio showing clear ideas across a range of touchpoints
  • Able to write concise, engaging copy for small spaces
  • Able to collaborate and revise copy in response to data and feedback
  • Fluent in the theory and practice of branding and UX
  • Proficient in Figma
  • Desirable: a love of writing and storytelling, applied to thinking in systems
  • Desirable: curiosity about every part of the customer journey
  • Desirable: belief in the value of journalism and real interest in the company's products and work
