The role
KQED, the Northern California public media organisation, is hiring an on-call associate producer for its Digital Video department. The role supports original digital video across KQED's portfolio, including mid-form YouTube videos, vertical and social video, and other projects published on KQED and third-party platforms. It is temporary and entry level: assignments depend on production needs and can last from a single day to several months. The work covers the whole production cycle, from pre-production to archiving.
What you'll do
- Support producers, editors and directors from development through delivery and archiving
- Help develop series, episodes, standalone videos, social content and special projects
- Research subjects, locations, archive material and third-party media
- Help with pre-interviews, interview preparation and fact-checking, and with scripts, treatments, questions and production notes
- Support field and studio shoots: prepare kit, organise materials and assist with lighting, audio and camera
- Handle logistics such as crew scheduling, call sheets, permits and permissions, kit, travel, parking and locations
- Source, track and clear third-party video, photos, music and other assets
- Keep production records, including releases, rights information, cue sheets and reports
- Ingest, log and manage media in KQED's asset management and post-production systems
- Assist in post-production: organise footage, build assemblies, apply notes and prepare deliverables
- Edit in Adobe Premiere Pro, including assemblies, graphics, captions and exports
- Create social assets such as excerpts, GIFs, vertical clips and thumbnails
- Prepare platform-specific versions for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, KQED.org and others
- Help wrap productions with final deliverables, documentation and archiving
- Work with producers, editors, photographers, reporters, Audience Development, Production Operations and other teams
- Carry out other duties as assigned
About you
- Foundational video production experience from professional, internship, academic, freelance or independent work
- Basic knowledge of producing, cinematography, editing or post-production
- Basic Adobe Premiere Pro skills and familiarity with other Adobe Creative Cloud applications
- Basic understanding of camera, lighting and audio equipment
- Basic understanding of digital video workflows, including media management, export, delivery and archiving
- Well organised, with good attention to detail
- Able to manage several assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced setting
- Strong research and communication skills
- Able to collaborate, take direction and feedback, and work independently while knowing when to escalate
- Basic understanding of journalistic ethics, accuracy and standards
- Familiar with digital and social video platforms
- Proficient with Google Workspace or similar tools
- Desirable: experience producing, shooting or editing video in any setting
- Desirable: experience with Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator or Media Encoder
- Desirable: experience with DSLR, mirrorless, cinema or other digital video cameras
- Desirable: experience with location sound and basic lighting
- Desirable: experience making content for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or other social platforms
- Desirable: experience with vertical video and mobile-first storytelling
- Desirable: experience with media asset management or production management tools
- Desirable: experience with interviews, pre-interviews or research for video
- Desirable: experience with motion graphics, animation or visual effects
- Desirable: experience in a newsroom, public media, a production company or a similar environment
- Desirable: a bachelor's degree in film, journalism, communications, media production or a related field
