In the Rijksmuseum's Innovation Lab, the team researches and explores future interactions and what technology means for the museum. From February 2027 the Lab is looking for two interns, for 36 hours a week over six months, who will join ongoing projects from day one, with room to experiment, work with data and AI, and contribute to a future vision. The work covers prototyping, building AI agents, user research and developing ideas and concepts; the team also runs workshops and lectures and acts as a sounding board for the museum.

What you'll be doing

  • Helping shape projects that take the Rijksmuseum's innovation vision further
  • Researching and visualising new ideas
  • Sparring with colleagues on design questions
  • Making (digital) prototypes
  • Taking part in creative sessions and presentations

Working at the Rijksmuseum

You join the IT department and the Innovation Team, made up of Innovation Manager Evita and two interns. Teams are multidisciplinary, with colleagues from exhibitions, IT, education or marketing, and the culture is open and curious, guided by learning by doing.

What we're looking for

A curious designer or creative who can think strategically about design and technology in a museum setting and also build ideas hands-on. Familiarity with generative AI or other digital technology is valued, or the drive to learn it quickly, along with a proactive attitude that combines conceptual and critical thinking with getting things done.

  • You are following a relevant university (WO) degree, for example in innovation, design or creative technology
  • You have a good command of both Dutch and English, spoken and written
  • You are interested in interactions and technology in a museum context

What's on offer

  • An internship allowance of €550 a month
  • The chance to gain experience at the Netherlands' national museum and a unique department in the museum sector
  • Taking part in events and sports activities, such as the summer and winter parties
  • Starting on day one alongside Innovation Manager Evita, who helps you set professional goals

Process

  • Introductory interviews take place on Monday 7 December or Wednesday 9 December

How to apply

Send your CV, portfolio and motivation letter via the Solliciteer button on the Rijksmuseum website; email applications are not accepted, and the vacancy may close early if enough responses come in.

Closing date: 29 November 2026
