The role
Mercury, a fintech company, is hiring a Staff Motion Designer with a 3D focus to own motion across its launch films, product videos, brand moments and motion system. It is the most senior craft role on the team and includes helping to decide how AI fits into motion work. The role can be based in San Francisco, New York or Portland, or done remotely from within the United States or Canada.
What you'll do
- Lead motion concepts for major launches, campaigns and brand moments, including strong 3D work
- Build 3D worlds, materials and textures that give key moments a distinct look
- Lead product storytelling, title design, typography, transitions, diagrams and UI motion
- Define and build Mercury's motion design system, including its principles and reusable templates
- Explore motion in interactive contexts and advise on where AI can help without flattening the craft
- Build and promote AI-assisted workflows for pre-visualisation, storyboarding, and generating textures, worlds and assets
- Assess new AI creative tools and decide which to adopt
- Work with Design, Writing, Narrative and Production from concept to delivery
- Lead high-level 3D and motion work and art-direct specialist animators, 3D artists and outside studios
- Raise the standard of motion craft across Brand Studio through critique, partnership and example
- Protect craft and consistency wherever the brand moves, from launch films to UI micro-interactions
About you
- At least 10 years of professional motion design experience, with a portfolio showing mastery of 3D and 2D and strong conceptual thinking about motion
- Advanced skills in Cinema 4D, Houdini, Blender or similar, including materials, texturing, lighting and world-building
- Advanced skills in After Effects or similar, with a strong command of timing, easing and finishing
- Experience building and documenting motion systems or brand guidelines
- Able to move between high-craft brand work and faster product, UI and social work without quality dropping
- A record of art-directing or mentoring designers, animators or outside studios
- Real fluency with AI tools as part of your creative practice
- Strong communication with internal teams, leadership and external partners
- A natural leader in a collaborative setting
- Nice to have: exposure to scripting or procedural workflows such as expressions, Houdini VEX or Python
