Working within a designated academic area, you'll work with internal stakeholders to develop and deliver a research communications strategy that enhances the global reputation of that area's research, its academics and the university.

You'll need an excellent understanding of your area's national and international research environment, and the ability to spot and use opportunities to raise its profile with target audiences. You'll build relationships with board members, researchers, senior colleagues across External Relations, research partners and funders.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop, coordinate and deliver the designated area's research communications strategy to meet agreed KPIs, managing budgets and commissioning activity
  • Provide audience insight and adapt strategies to reflect profile-raising opportunities
  • Review and analyse the success of research communications activity, monitoring volume, value and impact and adjusting tactics
  • Create or commission communications materials across online, publications, presentations, digital media (including film and vodcasts), briefings and internal reports
  • Give specialist research communications advice to academics, including traditional media, thought leadership, digital and social media
  • Work with the Events teams on international conferences and public engagement, and oversee research-focused internal and on-campus events
  • Highlight research excellence to support student and staff recruitment, public affairs, alumni relations and development
  • Represent the area in strategic planning, manage its communications budget and deputise for the relevant Business Partner
  • Support crisis communications as required

What we're looking for

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent), plus substantial experience in a communications, press or PR role in a complex organisation
  • Experience devising and delivering multi-channel strategic communications plans
  • Strong project management skills and experience of complex campaigns
  • The ability to translate complex information for diverse audiences
  • A track record of working with the media and selling in stories
  • Experience of managing budgets and senior stakeholder relationships
  • Crisis communications experience is desirable

What's on offer

  • £36,636 – £46,049 a year (Grade 7), with potential progression once in post to £48,822
  • Full time, fixed-term contract up to January 2028
  • 40 days' paid holiday a year, plus one paid volunteering day
  • Occupational sick pay and a pension scheme
  • Subsidised on-campus day nurseries
  • A range of flexible working arrangements, depending on the role
  • Development through the university's Birmingham Professional programme
