Squla combines technology, play and child psychology to design digital learning experiences that help primary school children learn through games, quizzes and interactive exercises aligned with the Dutch curriculum. We are fully renewing Squla, and this role involves researching what children, parents and teachers need, then exploring, testing and developing new concepts with the team.
You'll cover the full design process, from user research and concept validation to UX/UI design and implementation – answering questions such as how to help a child recover after a mistake, and how to make an exercise challenging without it becoming frustrating. You'll collaborate with Product, Engineering, Education, Data, Marketing and Design, and join our design guild for sharing knowledge and feedback.
(The listing is written in Dutch; the points below are lightly translated.)
What you'll be doing
- Understand the target group by speaking with children, parents and teachers, visiting schools, and combining observations with behavioural and usage data
- Explore and test new concepts by turning insights into ideas, making assumptions explicit, and choosing suitable prototypes and experiments
- Design and refine ideas into journeys, flows, interactions and visual designs, with attention to usability, accessibility and consistency
- Contribute to implementation by working with Engineering on functioning product experiences – you may "vibecode" product changes, subject to Engineering review
- Learn from results by using feedback, tests and usage data to judge what works and what to improve
What we're looking for
- You enjoy investigating why people need something and how a design can meet that need
- You have 3+ years' experience as a Product Designer, UX Designer or UX/UI Designer, and have shipped digital products in multidisciplinary teams
- You can run research independently: formulate questions, choose methods and translate findings into design decisions
- You distinguish between what users say, what they do and what you can conclude
- You explore several ideas before choosing a direction and use prototypes to learn quickly
- You have strong UI, visual design and prototyping skills, preferably in Figma
- You can weigh user needs against learning goals, product goals and technical constraints
- You explain your choices clearly, welcome feedback and take ownership of the quality of your work
- You can vibecode and use AI design tools, and critically assess the results with Engineering
- You speak and write Dutch and English well, and can carry out research with Dutch-speaking children, parents and teachers
- Your portfolio shows how you moved from research to insight, concept and validation
- Experience with research with children, EdTech, consumer digital products or game-based learning is a plus
What's on offer
- A salary of €4,100 – €5,100 a month (based on a 40-hour week)
- 24 holiday days, one "spijbeldag" (free day) and three assigned holiday days
- Collective pension and collective health insurance
- €600 annual learning budget
- Unlimited access to external coaches via Inuka Coaching, and to Goodhabitz
- Lifetime access to StudyGo and Squla accounts
- An office next to Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena station, with a Swapfiets or OV business card if you live more than 7km away
- A MacBook
- Optional Payroll Giving to support a charity
- Healthy lunches, unlimited good coffee, fresh fruit and snacks
- A Culture Crew that organises outings, pub quizzes and ski trips
- 36–40 hours a week, hybrid (at least 50% in the office)
Who we are
We're a passionate, diverse team focused on helping children grow in their learning, with an open, authentic culture – think book clubs, drinks, film nights, bake-offs, Mario Kart competitions and ski trips. We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every requirement.
How to apply
Apply via the Apply button and upload your CV and cover letter (or write your cover letter in the form). Visa sponsorship is not available – only candidates with a valid work permit for the Netherlands/EU are eligible.
