Deeplocal is hiring a junior-to-mid-level Experience Designer with two to four years' experience. The role is intentionally broad: primary backgrounds in graphic, motion, digital design, art direction, copywriting, strategy, 3D, interiors, architecture, product or experiential design are all welcome. The key requirement is translating ideas into experiences people can see, touch, move through and interact with.
This is "not a traditional UI/UX role", nor a strict graphic, motion or digital position – the work centres on physical space. Portfolios should show visual taste, creative thinking and physical interaction, such as environments, installations, prototypes or kinetic concepts. Remote candidates will be considered, with a preference for those in Pittsburgh or willing to relocate.
What you'll be doing
- Creative concepting: develop inventive, strategic, meaningful concepts with creative directors, designers, strategists and technologists.
- Physical and spatial thinking: contribute to ideas for installations, environments, objects, exhibits, activations and brand experiences.
- Experience design: concept and diagram user experiences through storyboards, flowcharts, journey maps or spatial diagrams.
- Visual and verbal communication: communicate ideas through whatever media fits, including sketches, renderings, motion tests, copy, decks, prototypes or AI-assisted visualisation.
- 3D and environmental design: contribute to environmental, object, spatial, 3D or product-like work, working with production designers and engineers to make ideas buildable.
- Cross-discipline collaboration: work with creative, technology, engineering, fabrication and production teams.
- Bringing ideas to fruition: contribute from early concepting through pitch, refinement, pre-production and production.
- Creative excellence: stay current on culture, technology, materials, interaction patterns and tools, and bring references that push the work further.
What we're looking for
- Curiosity about how things work, how people move through spaces, and how physical, digital and interactive elements combine.
- A primary discipline, with openness to learning other disciplines, tools and methods.
- Enjoyment of cross-functional teamwork, balancing aesthetics with engineering, fabrication, brand and UX.
- The ability to communicate visually and verbally through sketches, diagrams, storyboards, renders, prototypes or decks.
- The ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and self-directed priorities.
- The ability to design across brands with different styles, tones, palettes and voices.
- Eagerness to develop concepts that combine user experience, physical interaction and storytelling.
- Willingness to prototype quickly using models, tests, sketches or mock-ups.
- 2–4 years' experience, preferably at a creative agency, experiential or design studio, architecture or interiors practice, or production environment.
Desired skills
- Experiential design: thinking through form, materiality, interaction, flow, sequence and user journey.
- Concept development: building cross-discipline ideas supported by visuals, language and rationale.
- Spatial and physical communication: showing how ideas work in space through diagrams, models, plans or prototypes.
- Concept visualisation: communicating abstract ideas through mock-ups in any suitable medium.
- 3D thinking: spatial thinking matters more than dedicated 3D expertise; Rhino, SketchUp, Blender, Cinema 4D, Unreal or Enscape are a plus.
- Design craft: strong taste, composition and polish.
- Interaction awareness: interest in how people engage with objects, interfaces, environments and technology.
Hybrid candidates
The team is small and mostly multidisciplinary, and values a strong primary craft plus a willingness to stretch. Core strengths could include physical, interactive, experience, graphic, motion or UI design; animation; art direction; copywriting; strategy; 3D modelling; architecture; interior, environmental or product design; UX; or 2D and 3D visualisation. All candidates must show they can think about people, space, objects, interaction and experience.
Portfolio guidance
- Show how you think, not just final outcomes.
- Of particular interest: physical or interactive concepts; environmental, installation or exhibit work; storyboards, diagrams and process work; prototypes and tests; motion or graphic systems in physical spaces; digital concepts tied to real-world behaviour; and examples of communicating ideas to teams or clients.
- Finished work for major brands isn't required – student, self-directed, speculative, small-scale or experimental work is welcome.
- You don't need to match every listed skill.
What's on offer
- Base salary range: $50,000 – $84,000, varying by location, business needs, responsibility, experience and qualifications.
- A competitive benefits package.
