How to stay positive in business

Being positive at work will bring a wealth of benefits. It will make you happy, ensure you build strong contacts and result in success.

Not to go all hippie on you but I'm a big believer in karma, in the sense that if you're always spatting out negativity or doing negative things, you'll only welcome negativity your way. But if you're positive? You can expect a much more prosperous and rewarding career, that's whether you run your own business, work for someone else or have just started out.

Nobody likes negativity, so here are our top 10 ways to stay positive in business and ensure you always enjoy those subsequent benefits...

1. If you don't have anything nice to say...

...Don't say anything at all! It's an old saying but it's true. What good will come of saying something negative to someone? All you're doing is spreading negativity and people will hate that. It's poisonous and frankly, unnecessary. If you want people to like you, only say nice things. Besides, the bad things that you say will only come back to haunt you.

2. Avoid gossip at all costs

It always happens but people love to gossip. But if you're invited to get involved, just shrug your shoulders, keep your mouth shut and stay on the fence. It's a safe place to be because you don't want to start taking sides or get involved with any office politics. It will only backfire. Just look at who's often the most popular in any office environment – that's right! It's the person who doesn't get involved.

3. Don't openly criticise

With the huge influence of social media, it's all too easy to criticise other people's work. But if you think someone else's project is rubbish, then pull your head from out of your backside because I've got news for you... Your opinion is actually not that important and you might not actually be right. Even so, criticising other people's work makes you look egotistical and mean. Not a good way to make friends and influence people.

4. Limit time with those nasties

Is there someone in your working life who drives you mad or their negativity is sapping your energy? Limit the amount of time you spend with them. Cut them out of your life as much as possible and empower yourself to control your own reactions to their negative behaviour, i.e. don't let the other person affect your mood.

5. Get help

If you're struggling at work, get help! That's whether you ask your boss or colleagues for support or you figure out a way of running your business more effectively by outsourcing some work. Don't let pride get in the way of making your working life more positive. Get as much help and support as you can.

6. Cope with demanding clients

Some clients eh! They can be so difficult to work with. But don't worry – if you're working in an agency and you have no choice but to work for a certain person, then try and make the best of it by 'killing them with kindness' and going above and beyond to impress and win them over. But if you work for yourself? You can choose to be picky. As you become more established, you'll get wiser at spotting the 'bag eggs' but until then, if you've been hired by someone who's driving you mad – find a diplomatic way of getting rid of them. Life is too short.

7. Learn how to deal with attitudes and egos

What is it with some people? Are they so self-important that they can't be nice? It's a sad fact of life but a lot of people tend to have an over-inflated opinion of themselves. But how do you deal with these types? I say just feed their egos and allow them to be right or get their own way. Because if that's what leads to a peaceful and happy existence, then we can tell a few white lies can't we!

8. Be kind to yourself

Often the biggest critic is ourselves, so stop putting yourself down! Just try and do your very best at everything and reward yourself for a job well done. Treat yourself as you would a good friend and you'll be a much happier and productive worker.

9. Embrace the positives

It's funny isn't it, how we're programmed to almost ignore the good things people say and instead tend to obsess about any negative remarks. Try and switch that around and write a list of 10 nice things people have said to you recently. Whenever you're going through self-doubt, read your list and you should feel a lot better.

10. Take further action

And finally, if all of the above doesn't work and you're still not gaining a positive working life, then perhaps it's time for change. Whether you realise a career refresh is in order or you've got the bug to go freelance, you are in control of your own destiny so make the necessary changes to be happier.
