Stepping into the world of Syd Bee is like being immersed in a rich blanket of colours. The Seattle-based artist depicts her subjects in a dreamlike state, often surrounded by a soft, ethereal glow. The bold colour palette of pinks, purples and blues bring to mind a feminine pop culture world.
Whether they are surrounded by natural elements or wrapped in plumes of smoke, her figures usually have large, vacant-looking eyes suggesting that they are in a trance or compelled by some sort of magical, witchcraft powers. The artist says: “Most of my figures look lost in thought or dream, so in that way there’s not often uncomfortable confrontation with the viewer – although a title or maybe a facial expression will allude to a more intense emotional state.”
