Major historical moments in 1960s America reinvented to reflect riotous racial issues

American photographer Tyler Shields reinvents key moments in US history with his cinematic series ‘Historical Fiction’. Concentrating on race relations in the 1960s, the series looks at the deaths of Marliyn Monroe, JFK and Martin Luther King, emphasising the effects they had on various American communities. The photographs may appear glossy but they offer an insight into the turmoil across the US in that decade, with riots, police brutality and grief spreading everywhere.

An exhibition of Shields’ series is currently on display in the Andrew Weiss Gallery in California until the end of June.
