Japan’s struggle between uniformity and individual identities caught on film

Taking a trip to Japan, Swedish-based photographer Pascal Vossen explored the paradox between individualism and collectivism in his series ‘The Nail That Sticks Up Will Be Hammered Down’. The ironic title references a Japanese saying, hinting at uniformity and the rejection of individualism.

Japan’s conservative society is clearly shown in the photographs with the glimpses of Western culture seeking to unlock personal identity among the younger generation. But there is still the idea that is it a dishonourable and selfish act to deviate from the norm.

Vossen said: “I wanted to study this societal complexity through photographs, to capture a nation in flux, watching closely for the moments when its many beautiful faces were revealed”.
