Dark and romantic night cityscapes by Russian artist Alexei Butirskiy

If you love cities as much as Russian artist Alexei Butirskiy, then you'll appreciate his elegant cityscape paintings – almost always depicting urban life as the sun dips below the horizon and bathes the streets and buildings in a tranquil blanket of dusk.

Whether based on San Francisco, London or Paris, his incredibly detailed oil paintings are so perfect, you might mistake them for photographs. Speaking of his work, Alexei said: “When I paint, I don‘t just copy from any particular place. I try to memorise the original impression I had when I was somewhere, and then I recompose it in my head, based on how I feel about it. After that, I paint. I think it is very important for an artist to not just copy mechanically from nature. In that case, the artist could be replaced by a camera.

"An artist should rather have a goal and then follow it to create the emotional image and a special atmosphere in the painting, and to thereby convey an individual message. Painting nature with all its many faces is always magnificent. To me, there is no such thing as bad weather."

Born in Moscow, Alexei graduated from Moscow Art College in 1996 and later went on to study at the Russian Academy of the Arts under the instruction of the respected professor L.S. Hasyanova. Since then, he has exhibited his beautiful artworks across the globe, mainly focusing on cityscapes, often at night.
