Students work with Sarah Boris to create Bauhaus-inspired typeface for The Cass School of Art

A team of second-year graphic design, illustration and animation students from the Visual Communication course at The Cass has worked with brilliant designer and all-around super dude Sarah Boris to create a bespoke typeface for its degree show.

The typeface will be used across The Cass School of Art, Architecture & Design summer exhibition, billed as "a degree show with a difference" in that every year, students from across the school, from first year to post-graduates show their work together.

This is the first year that students have had a direct hand in creating and producing the identity. A team of second-year students from the Visual Communication cluster of courses worked with Boris, who has been teaching at The Cass as Visual Communication’s industry designer-in-residence for the academic year 2018/19 mentoring small teams of students on a number of live briefs.

Students Gemma Ageraniotis, Michael Brown, Luigi Conte and James Iredale pitched and won the opportunity to work in collaboration with Boris to develop and realise their winning concept; based on a typeface inspired by abstractions of the style of the Bauhaus school, which celebrates its centenary this year. It also looks to the "dynamic minimalism" of Swiss Style, according to the Cass.

“It was the first time that I experienced pitching, being selected, working with a client and using typography in a way that I hadn’t experienced before," says Brown. "The outcome is great work to add to my portfolio... I got to collaborate with amazing designers such as Quentin Schmerber and Sarah Boris, from both of whom I have learned a huge amount about working with clients in the real world."

As well as creating a fully functioning typeface, the identity can be brought to life through digital animation. The typeface can be downloaded for free on (the Cass Visual Communication blog)[https://thecassviscomm.tumblr.com/].

The Cass Summer Show runs from today until 30 June 2019 at The Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University Old Castle St, London E1 7NT.
