You’ve not stepped into a movie or back in time if you find yourself face to face with Marilyn Monroe or Superman along Hollywood Boulevard. Los Angeles is buzzing with plenty of people who dress up as legendary film stars and iconic characters, calling it their day job to be impersonators and pose for pictures with tourists.
Copenhagen-based photographer Ken Hermann captured his fascination for these performers, who “are – or once were – pursuing the American dream of becoming something special and famous. And, it is this struggle missed with the childish fantasy world I find interesting”. Hermann’s ‘Hollywood Street Characters’ series conveys the emotional complexity of those performers wishing to live out an American dream and unlock a separate, more idealised identity.
