Creative England, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe - acting through its External Development Studio (XDEV) – and Birmingham Science Park, have announced a pilot investment fund for indie developers to produce games content for PlayStation Mobile (PSM).
£25,000 will be awarded to a PlayStation Mobile indie developed project chosen by a panel at this year’s LAUNCH Conference in Birmingham (13-14th November) following a pitch by the five finalised projects.
The fund is designed to be able to deliver a concept/prototype including a presentation of the game, design briefs and visualisation representative of proposed final quality. The aim is to have a game ready for full consumer trial by summer 2013.
The competition is open to all UK based developers, who have until the end of October to submit their entries. On 13th November at LAUNCH the five finalised indie developers will pitch and the winner will be announced the following day.
If the pilot proves successful, further project funds will be provided, tied in to other games conferences throughout the year.
XDEV will have the first right of refusal in regard to publishing the final game.
Jim Farmery, Creative England’s Director of Business Development, said: “We will keep a close eye on this pilot project as a potentially one useful way for Creative England to support games development. In our conversations with the partners we were all keen to start small and test the water with the concept, with a view to replicating the idea.”
James Hawkins, Executive Producer for XDEV, said: “The beauty of our exciting new PlayStation Mobile initiative is that small teams and even bedroom coders can use it to create a great game. The PlayStation Mobile development studio is freely downloadable and this initiative is a great opportunity for smaller developer’s with little or even no PlayStation experience, to check it out and make a great new game for PlayStation. It is equally a great opportunity for XDEV to meet passionate and talented teams within the UK and for us to hear all about your great ideas!”
Maria Stukoff, Head of Academic Development at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said: “PlayStation Mobile is the best platform for the next generation of game developers to get their first game published! I really encourage submissions from recent graduates, game incubators and young start-ups to take shot at this.”
David Hardman, CEO of Birmingham Science Park, said: “The LAUNCH events programme and conference, held at Birmingham Science Park, is one of the largest activities of its kind for the UK’s digital gaming industry. To be able to showcase this new £25,000 award for a games concept, which also enables the winner to work alongside Sony, is a very exciting addition to the itinerary for our two-day LAUNCH conference in November. We are grateful to Creative England and Sony for enabling this ground breaking initiative to take place at Birmingham Science Park.”
